PURPLE SHAMPOOS: compare & review

I have blonde hair. I also have hard water. THE STRUGGLE IS REAL!
Hard water makes blonde hair "dishwater blonde", you feel my pain? Minerals build up and turn blonde hair this ugly
brassy color and sometimes there's a greenish hue- it's depressing.

So let's talk about the cure: toning with PURPLE SHAMPOO!
Purple shampoo will tone brassy/orange/yellow blonde down to a nice ash/beige blonde shade.

(Important note: the pink+purple streaks in my hair are from hair dye and NOT the shampoo! I've heard people complain about leaving purple shampoo in their hair for too long and getting purple tints in their hair but that's ridiculous LOL I've left purple shampoo in my hair for 3 hours at a time and my blonde hair never turned purple because of it)

2 OPTIONS FOR APPLYING PURPLE SHAMPOO:
1. Regularly in the shower- apply it like regular shampoo at the beginning of your shower and let it set while you wash/shave/etc for 5+ minutes, then rinse and condition.
2. Once a week toning treatment- you can apply it to damp hair and scrub it in like regular shampoo, or use an application brush and apply it to dry hair. Make sure to cover every inch of your hair! Put on a shower cap and let sit for 30min-2hours, then rinse and condition.

Review for Jhirmack "Silver Brightening Shampoo", about $4 for 20oz at Walmart
I like that this is easily available at Walmart. This was the first purple shampoo I tried, and it works well. It is strong and a little drying, so you definitely need a good conditioner afterwards. Honestly it's so drying that if you're doing a once/week toning treatment I wouldn't recommend leaving it on more than 30min.
Jhirmack recently re-packaged this shampoo as "Silver Plus Ageless Shampoo"

(there's also smaller 16oz bottles for $6)
side note: this shampoo has protein in it
This is the best purple shampoo for the price, it works almost as well as Jhirmack but it's not as drying. I'll use this as my regular shampoo every wash. Sometimes these Liter bottles go on sale at Sally's for $8 so that's the time to stock up! I like this purple shampoo best because it makes my hair sparkle and look naturally highlighted.

Review for the original Clairol "Shimmer Lights":

I used this on my blonde hair (not my bangs lol those were orange&blue for the Denver Broncos game! WOOOO!!) and it did a cool-tone wash over my hair. My blonde felt a shade brighter than before but there wasn't that same *sparkle* as with the GVP version. This original also smells like lemongrass and made me nauseous.

Review for Blond Brilliance "Lathering Toner in COOL", about $10 for 10oz at Sally Beauty
This product is basically a purple shampoo but it works best as a once/week toning treatment because it is so powerful! This makes my blonde hair perfectly ash-toned and doesn't dry my hair out. You can tell it's *strong* because the stains it leaves on my bath tub require more scrubbing than the others (grrrr! haha).
